The Smoked Caramel Cheesecake
Ready?
Let’s dive in.
Your cheesecake plate lies in front of you on the little table. You lean forward with a slight smile and catch a waft of the delightful warmth from your well-deserved dessert. Picking up the tiny-pronged dessert fork, you angle it almost perpendicular to the slender edge of the perfectly cut wedge. You dig in, deliberately and scoop off a small portion with all the elements - the smoked caramel sauce on top, the creamy cheesecake and the crumbly crust at the bottom.
Your first taste - a flavour burst in your mouth and in your brain. The salty toastiness of the smoked caramel hits your taste buds like a truck and they are dead! The cheesecake filling melts in your mouth leaving only an aftertaste as evidence while the crumbs tease along the texture of your tongue.
“Mmmm”, you close your eyes. It almost feels criminal to have something this delightful.
Your second bite lacks the meticulous detail of your first one. It’s a swift, instinctual dive. You barely have to use your teeth. Your soul sighs in satisfaction. Another bite follows, with which you notice the cheesecake filling to be smoky as well. You doubt if this little dessert has the potent ability to make you high. Its buttery and toasty notes coupled with the smoky flavour have it all, you think.
Ah! What bliss!
You stare out the window while it melts on your tongue. Your book lies aside, face-down and forgotten. The soft murmur of the other patrons and the occasional clink of cups add more glow to the warmth you’re already feeling. You finish the rest of your cheesecake taking your own sweet time, use the bill to mark your book and get up from your seat.
You romanticised the heck out of your life, you know it and you walk out the quaint café door feeling the joy of being alive…
