"Sweet is our gift, yet small"
I bought a postcard with the quote by Homer on it. Below is what inspiration served me: short and sweet.
Setting aside the short story anthology that he was reading, he arched his back and let out a sigh. “I need more of this in my life”, he thought to himself. He got off the couch that had the sweetest supporting pillows, walked to the bookshelf to drop off his book and decided to work on his craft.
Today was a Sunday, a mellow, forgiving sort. It allowed him to cozy up behind the window, now tainted with streaks of rain on the outside, and do nothing. Or everything. He sat down by the piano and closed his eyes softly. They were beautiful eyes, hazelnut and deliquescent. A hum escaped his throat and he let his fingers mimic. Ardently, he continued to let the magic flow through his fingers and unto the keys that let out melodious whiffs of pleasure.
Minutes passed in the order of tens and he opened his eyes. A smiled conquered his lips and as if the timing couldn’t have been more perfect, the doorbell chimed. Her back faced the door he swung open. She turned around, bringing into his view a dainty little package.
“Cake”, she noticed how his eyes turned into melting gold as the evening sun hit them. She gave him a warm smile that unhesitantly emanated from the depths of joy and he knew it. Pure, unadulterated happiness, he thought.
They walked to the couch, to the soft touch of the amber pillows.
“It’s an eating cake on the couch kind of a day, don’t you think?”
She giggled in response and nodded, “Why do anything else anywhere else when you can have cake, right here, right now!”
He undid the golden ribbon and uncovered the blue box to expose a decadent chocolate cake - a model in size and rich in visual texture. The room was filled with a pleasant aroma of mirth, smiles and chocolate.
“I think I’ll be a chocolatier someday”, he said with an earnest look.
“And I think that’ll suit you.”
“Hmmm..”
“Hmmm.. This cake is delicious".”
“Mmmm…”
The pattern of the rain exhausted behind them and the sun slowly disappeared in the wake of the hills. The moon came out delicately. It was full.
This is beautiful, and so is that quote! This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. My past year was full of big goals and big adventures, but I think it’s the smaller moments where I find true joy.
